A Guide to the Realms: Journey to Makal

Makal is a land of contradictions, where the horizon shifts from scorching dunes to lush green canopies as swiftly as a halfling changes his mind about second breakfast. The deserts burn by day and freeze by night, hiding secrets beneath endless sands, while the jungles teem with life so loud and relentless it nearly drowns out one’s own thoughts. I confess I nearly turned back twice—first when my boots filled with sand, and again when a carnivorous vine tried to make a meal of me. Still, what is a botanist if not a stubborn fool with a notebook?

The biomes of Makal

The deserts of Makal stretch like seas of fire. Heat shimmers off the dunes, and the wind sculpts the sand into shapes that appear almost deliberate, as though the land itself wishes to keep secrets.

The Hithmari High Desert is the harshest of them all, bone-dry, eerily silent—yet speckled with life if you know where to look. Desert sage, with its silvered leaves, thrives in the cracks of stone, and I once glimpsed a flower blooming from a cactus at midnight, only to vanish by dawn.

Then, without warning, the world transforms. One moment you are wiping grit from your eyes; the next, you are swallowed by a canopy of emerald. The Jungles of Makal are alive in every sense. Technicolor birds chitter overhead, orchids burst like fireworks from tree trunks, and the air hums with insects large enough to carry off a halfling hat (which, I regret to say, I learned firsthand).

The Cantrip Candles inspired by Makal

Or is it the other way around?

For those unwilling to brave venomous vines and scorching suns, Cantrip has bottled Makal’s wonders into several immersive scents and turned them into indulgent soy wax candles

Selenite Outpost

Rest stops are rare in the desert, and rarer still are those suffused with comfort. This blend of palo santo, Moroccan mint, and curry spice recalls the cooling shade of a desert outpost, where merchants share stories over spiced tea and the air is thick with incense and anticipation.

Jungles of Makal

Few scents capture chaos so beautifully. With notes of undergrowth, petrichor, and rich loam, this candle breathes with the damp vitality of the jungle floor after rain. Strike a match and you’ll swear vines are curling toward your window, and that something just moved in the shadows.

Stamina Potion

Not all potions are brewed in cauldrons. This invigorating blend of thyme, ginger, and peppercorn smells like bottled resilience itself. A whiff sharpens the senses, stirs the blood, and makes one believe they could walk ten leagues more (or at least make it through one more combat encounter).

Hithmari High Desert

There’s a particular sharpness to desert air—clean, unyielding, and ancient. This fragrance of sagebrush, red clay, and cactus captures that exact austerity. It is dry winds across sandstone, the hush of twilight after a scorching day, and the endless horizon daring you onward.

Osric’s advice to adventurers

Travel in Makal is not for the faint of heart, nor for those who pack lightly. I’ve learned, through both triumph and embarrassing mishap, that survival here hinges on a few simple rules. Consider these my hard-won lessons, offered so you need not repeat my mistakes.

Never underestimate a desert night. The days in Makal’s deserts will roast you like a chestnut on Yule, but when the sun slips beneath the dunes, the cold comes quick and cruel. More than one bold adventurer has boasted of their resilience at midday only to be found shivering in the sand come dawn. Carry an extra cloak! You’ll thank me later.

Watch the trees. The jungle is a dangerous place. Everyone frets about snakes underfoot, but it’s the branches above that hide the true dangers. Fey creatures eager to relieve you of shiny trinkets, or worse, a displacer beast poised to spring. Keep your head on a swivel, and your pack strapped tight.

Carry more water than pride. I once insisted I could stretch a single waterskin across the dunes. It ended with me hallucinating conversations with a cactus (it was not polite, I assure you). Pride may bolster the ego, but only water will keep your bones from bleaching under the Makali sun.

Trust your nose. In Makal, scents carry warnings and welcomes alike. The sharp tang of mint in the desert air may mean an oasis, while the rich, earthy petrichor in the jungle heralds both rain and slick, treacherous footing. Follow your senses—they may save your life!

Makal is a land of contradictions: burning and blooming, desolate and overflowing with life. For me, it is proof that The Realms hold wonders enough to fill a hundred lifetimes of study. For you, dear reader, it can be enjoyed from the safety of your armchair… preferably with a candle burning low.

Until the next journey,
Osric O’Malley
