One of the biggest questions we face during development is how to balance “accuracy” with palatability. Should a scent stay true to its conceptual inspiration, even if that results in something harsh or unappealing? Or should we prioritize making it smell incredible, even if that means deviating from expectations? This question was at the heart of our journey to create HELLSCAPE.
Designing the Scent of Hell
HELLSCAPE is the latest addition to our line of planar-inspired fragrances, joining Forest of Fae and Realm of Shadows. Like its predecessors, HELLSCAPE doesn’t have a direct real-world analog but is designed to evoke a specific atmosphere—a scent that brings to life the fiery depths and treacherous landscapes of hellish realms found in our favorite TTRPGs and video games.
When developing HELLSCAPE, we considered what a journey into such a realm would feel like. The obvious approach might be to make a candle that smells like fire and brimstone, but those scents either don’t exist or wouldn’t be enjoyable in a home setting. Instead, we focused on creating an impression of heat, danger, and temptation. A scent, a force, that lures you in, despite the risks.

The Scent Profile: Heat Meets Sweet
The base note of HELLSCAPE is hot pepper heat, which immediately stimulates the sinuses, creating a sensory response that suggests warmth and brightness. The effect is almost physical. You can almost feel the glow of magma on your skin. However, to prevent the fragrance from being too harsh or one-dimensional, we needed a counterbalance. That’s where persimmon came in.
From a technical perspective, persimmon’s natural sweet-tart profile blends beautifully with the fiery spice of chili pepper. It softens the intensity while maintaining the scent’s immersive warmth. The layered experience is what truly makes the scent. First you get the heat, then a subtle sweetness that lingers, making the candle more approachable and intriguing.
From a lore perspective, persimmon adds even more depth to the fragrance. In many tabletop adventures, hellish realms often contain powerful artifacts or rare resources that lure adventurers in. The persimmon represents that hidden treasure—a rare, precious element that makes the journey worthwhile. Additionally, persimmons thrive in warm, subtropical climates, further reinforcing the subconscious sense of heat in the fragrance.
